Testing: Total Coliforms and E. coli (Code 106)

Special Pathogens Laboratory offers testing for total coliforms and E. coli to determine acceptable water quality of drinking (potable) water, spa/pool water and reuse water. We're also NELAP certified for testing E. coli and HPC in drinking water.

  • Coliform group consists of several genera of bacteria in the Enterobacteriaceae family, including E. coli
  • Large part of the microflora in human’s intestinal tract
  • Indicates sewage contamination
  • Indicator bacteria for determining water quality
  • Fecal contamination and waterborne pathogens can case a variety of illnesses:
    • acute gastrointestinal iilness (AGI) with diarrhea
    • abdominal discomfort
    • nausea
    • vomiting

Under EPA's proposed Revised Total Coliform Rule, public water systems vulnerable to microbial contamination (as indicated by monitoring results for total coliforms and E. coli) are required to assess the problem and take corrective action to reduce illnesses and deaths due to potential fecal contamination and waterborne pathogen exposure.
