Why SPL

The Special Pathogens Laboratory has been an active infectious disease microbiology laboratory for approximately 25 years. In that time, we have become internationally recognized as a Legionella reference center.  The laboratory has participated in the development of new antimicrobial therapies for Legionnaires’ disease, new Legionella diagnostic tests, and has pioneered detection and control methodologies aimed at the prevention of Legionnaires’ disease (See publications on www.Legionella.org)

Our testing methods have been validated in prospective studies that correlate disease risk with the extent of environmental contamination (Stout et al. Infection Control Hospital Epidemiology “In Press” 2007).  No other Legionella testing laboratory can make this claim.  This emphasis on scientific validation and evidence-based medicine separates us from other “experts” and laboratories.  It is our duty and pleasure to offer this quality service to you.

Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia caused by bacteria belonging to the family Legionellaceae.  One species in the family, Legionella pnuemophila, causes the majority of infections.  The Special Pathogens Laboratory has developed methods for Legionella detection and identification, including the formulation of selective differential media for culture isolation of Legionella.

Legionella culture and identification requires special knowledge and expertise not found in most microbiology laboratories.  Our skill and experience in this area provides clients with absolute confidence in the results they receive from the Special Pathogens Laboratory.
